The Apple iPad Mini 4 and the LG G Pad II 10.1 are two tablets that made their way into the market in the second half of 2015.
While the Mini 4 came out in September, the G Pad II presented itself a little earlier in 2015. Interestingly, they were both launched as refinement models to their predecessors. Although Apple gadgets are known to be expensive, LG proves that it can also offer its customers high budget devices with this tablet. Apple allows you to use a nano SIM with its tablet, whereas LG takes one step more by providing slots to insert two nano SIMs at a time in its tablet. It is more comfortable to use the iPad Mini 4 in portrait orientation whilst the LG G Pad II is more often used in the landscape mode. Before you set out on buying one of these tablets, read this guide to know what you can expect from them.
Dimensions, Weight and Body Material
The Apple tablet comes with a size of 203.2 x 134.8 x 6.1mm compared the LG tablet that has a proportion of 254.3 x 161.1 x 7.8mm. Based on whether you want a Wi-Fi or a LTE model, the Apple tablet’s weight changes slightly. The Wi-Fi and LTE models of the iPad Mini 4 weigh 299g and 304g respectively. In contrast, the LG G Pad II is available only a single model weighing 489g. Interestingly, both the tablets are made of metal making them appear stylish and classy.
Verdict: There is no question as to which tablet will be easier to operate or hold in your hand. The full credit goes to the Mini 4 irrespective of the model you choose. With the smaller size making it compact and the lesser weight making it less tiring in your hand, this tablet easily wins over the G Pad II 10.1.
Screen Display and Pixel Density & Resolution
The iPad Mini 4 comes with a medium size screen of 7.9 inches for a tablet. On the other hand, the LG G Pad II 10.1 is equipped with a bigger 10.1-inch screen. The two screens incorporate IPS LCD displays for wide viewing angles. The iPad has a pixel resolution of 1536 x 2048 and a pixel density of 324ppi. The G Pad, however, embraces a pixel resolution and a pixel density of 1920 x 1200 and 224ppi respectively. The Apple tablet has an oleophobic coating on its display screen and a scratch-resistant glass. While the LG tablet does not support this, it has a couple of other features that the Apple device does not. The first feature known as the Reader mode is quite helpful to avid readers. When they activate this mode, the screen lighting gets optimized so that there is no strain on the eyes. The second noteworthy feature is the ability to work on two tasks at a time using the Dual Window option.
Verdict: Everything appears sharper and clearer on the iPad Mini 4 owing to its overall enriched pixel resolution and pixel density. Movie watching and gaming are definitely more enjoyable. This is definitely a huge advantage of owning this tablet. But to save time with multitasking like on your desktop or laptop, you will have to rely on the LG G Pad II 10.1.
Camera
Apple’s Mini 4 has an 8MP rear snapper with 3264 x 2448 resolution as against LG’s G Pad II 10.1 that uses a normal 5MP camera with 2592 x 1944 resolution. The two cameras are integrated with the autofocus functionality to make capturing your favorite shots a stress-free experience. The front 1.2MP snapper in the iPad Mini 4 supports face detection while the LG G Pad II 10.1 has a 2MP camera in its place to make selfies and video calls a lot better.
Hardware, Memory and Software
Apple has always relied on its own hardware configuration that is unique to its devices. This has not undergone a change even in the Mini 4 that houses a dual core 1.5GHz A8 processor coupled with M8 motion coprocessor on a 64-bit architecture. In comparison, the G Pad II 10.1 uses a quad core 2.26GHz processor. The Apple and LG tablets use PowerVR and Adreno graphics processors respectively. Loaded with 2GB RAM each, the two Apple models come in three choices as there is no way to increase the memory using external accessories. Based on your requirement, you can buy a tablet with 16GB, 64GB or 128GB ROM. You should however bear in mind that as the ROM value increases, so does the price of the device. The LG device comes with the normal 16GB ROM and allows to increase the same up to 128GB using a memory card.
Apple has released its iPad with its latest iOS 9 with a planned upgrade to the next level. LG’s G Pad comes with the latest version of Android’s KitKat installed.
Verdict: With a quad core processor and a better clocking frequency, operation is smoother and faster in the LG G Pad II 10.1 when compared to the iPad Mini 4. Also, it is more economical to increase the memory of a tablet externally than buy a tablet with increased internal storage.
