Many companies have chosen to add more mid-range smartphones to their portfolio and made a lot of fans very happy. Not everyone is obsessed with smartphones supporting the highest screen resolution, most powerful processors or the most advanced cameras, and they’re settling for a cheaper device which can be used for making voice calls or for taking occasional photos. There are many flagships to choose from, such as Apple’s iPhone 6S, LG’s G4, Hauwei’s Nexus 6P, Microsoft’s Lumia 950 XL, or Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Note 5, but their manufacturers have also built cheaper phones with decent specs. We made a list of the best mid-range smartphones of 2015, so here are the VIPs.
ASUS ZenFone 2
It costs over $200 and it can be ordered from Amazon. It features a plastic back with a brushed metal effect, it’s curved on the edges and has the volume buttons placed under the rear camera which has a resolution of 13MP. On the front side is fitted a 5.5-inch screen with a Full HH resolution and on top of it, on the right side, sits a secondary camera of 5MP, while at the bottom is placed an aluminum band. The phablet is powered by an Intel Atom Z3580 Quad-core 2.3 GHz processor backed by 2GB of RAM, or by an Intel Atom Z3560 Quad-core 1.8 GHz with 4GB of RAM. There are three variants of storage, but only two of them can be expanded up to 64GB. The battery is very large, but non-removable, supporting a capacity of 3,000 mAh.
Moto G3
On Amazon, it costs less than $180, and for this price, you’ll get a 5-inch screen supporting a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, a pair of cameras with resolutions of 13MP and 5MP with auto-HDR, a 2470 mAh battery which lasts a full day and a half and inside of it, you’ll find a Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 processor which is backed by 1GB of RAM for the variant with 8Gb of internal memory, while the other variant has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Also, there is a microSD card slot available for each model, allowing the users to expand the capacity up to 32GB. The phone has a plastic back with diagonal lines and the desired color can be ordered from the Moto Maker website.
Huawei P8 Lite
This device is slightly more expensive than the Moto G 3, but its back is made of an aluminum alloy and it’s much slimmer. But the screen measures also 5-inch and supports 720x1280pixels, but it’s powered by a different processor, which is a HiSilicon Kirin 620 with eight cores clocked at 1.2GHz, which are backed by 2GB of RAM. The internal memory can be expanded from 16GB up to 128GB, using a sim card that occupies the SIM 2 slot. The cameras have also resolutions of 13MP and 5MP, but the battery is very small, supporting a capacity of 2200mAh which provides 11 hours of talk time.
Microsoft Lumia 640
This phone costs around $120 and it has weaker specs than its rivals. It features a glossy colorful plastic back, the screen measures 5-inch and supports 720x1280pixels, but it’s powered by a not so fast Qualcomm MSM8926 Snapdragon 400 Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 processor which is coupled with 1GB of RAM, but this device is not running on Android, but on Microsoft Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim on top of it. The internal memory isn’t too generous either, supporting 8GB and a microSD card slot for expansion up to 128GB. Luckily, the advantage of this handset is that it supports 4G LTE, but its cameras are disappointing, as their resolutions are limited to 8MP and 1MP. On paper, the 2500 mAh battery lasts 17 hours and 30 minutes when talking on 3G.
