“There is a noteworthy demand by our members and industry in general that we enhance Bluetooth with the new capabilities we just announced”, Toby Nixon, the chair of the SIG Board of Directors said in a statement. “According to the latest projections, the IoT market has a potential of reaching between $2 and $11.1 trillion in 2025. The Bluetooth updates slated for 2016 will help turn these expectations into a reality and thus accelerate the much desired growth in IoT”.
There are a number of benefits that will come along with these updates. For instance, all Bluetooth Smart devices are expected to increase their range by up to 4 times the current range. This will transform all infrastructure and smart home applications as it will deliver extended and more solid connections for both full-home and outdoor usage.
As far as speed is concerned, expect an increment of up to 100% without bringing any effect on the energy consumed by the devices. This will help a lot in increasing the speed at which data is exchanged, especially in acute applications such as medical devices. Furthermore, there will be better responsiveness as well as lower latency.
With mesh networking enabled in next year’s Bluetooth devices, it will be possible bring together different devices in a network that can cover the entire home or building, an ability that leaves the doors open for industrial and other home automation applications.
